And so this is Christmas, and what have we done? As said John Lennon. This one has been a quite good one for me, really. It was a sunny day today; cold and crisp, not like some years where it was rain after rain. We opened presents and phoned family. Ate and drank. But really, what is it about? It’s good to have some time off (though I’ve noticed that cafes chains and supermarkets only close on Christmas day) and giving friends and family presents seems a nice idea. But there is this feeling that it’s all rather pointless now. That millions of people sitting down on one day to eat similar meals and watch the same stuff on the television feels odd. Meaningless. As a country we are too disconnected to suddenly be pulled together by this. And now that the religious side of it has been pushed aside by shopping, I do wonder what we get out of it? It’s not like we can’t eat a roast dinner on any other day. Or buy gifts. We are now whipped up into a frenzy by the shops to really go for it over Christmas but it’s just rather superficial. So, this is Christmas, and what really is the point? Beats me.
