Then Came the Rain

As I write this I can hear rain drops on the atrium where I work. The constant patter of them is rhythmic, relaxing.

But weeks of rain has raised the levels of rivers in Southern Britain and added to the storms that have battered the coasts.

The press blame the Environment Agency or the government but a few voices mention that dreaded phrase Climate Change.

The rainfall and floods have been described as the worst in living memory or once-in-a-lifetime events. But as these become more frequent isn't it time to start a serious discussion? If there is even a chance this is caused by climate change, shouldn't we at least slightly curb our consumption? The irony is that business-as-usual approach will eventually mean business-as-usual is impossible. Even private firms are concerned that such weather makes their operations impossible. And with our just-in-time, integrated systems we are more vulnerable than before.

So what will have to happen before our leaders wake up and start talking about the future we face? More floods? Hurricanes?

Or will they pretend that everything is fine. Don't worry, this won't happen again soon.

Until it does.
